Herman Melville OMOO adventures in the South Seas
Omoo by Herman Melville is the second volume of an ideal trilogy that begins with Typee and concludes with Mardi. The book was published in 1847, during a successful period for the writer.
It begins where Typee leaves off, with a captain who learns of the protagonist’s captivity and, needing sailors, takes responsibility for his release from the Typee.
This marks the start of an adventure on a ship in poor condition but skilled in navigation, dedicated to hunting sperm whales. A rebellious and hostile crew makes up the team, providing us with an unforgettable journey into the spirit of sailors. The captivating narrative includes sea stories followed by tales on land, with glimpses of Polynesian life, dances, and tribal rituals.
Omoo, with illustrations by Roberto Abbiati, is the twenty-third title of RRD Books, the RRD series dedicated to sea stories and those who lived to tell them.
