“Where is that ship going? It’s following the dangerous route where so many have been shipwrecked! It has no certain destination! You can expect any danger and must face it without hesitation! Only God knows where it will land! God guides it!”
Verne’s youthful novel, A Winter Amid the Ice, also known as The Captain of the Young Ardita, tells the gripping story of the sailor Jean Cornbutte, who sets sail on his brig to rescue his son Louis, lost in the northern seas. The exhausting struggle with the cold, hunger, polar night and solitude, polar bears, and finally the mutiny of part of the crew are all themes and motifs of intense, violent drama. The novel is followed by a long story, The Blockade Runners, a sea adventure set during the American Civil War.
