..Suddenly the waters around them slowly swelled into wide circles; then they rose rapidly, as if sliding over the sides of a submerged iceberg rising quickly to the surface. A muffled roar, an underground hum was heard; then everyone held their breath, as, in a tangle of dangling cables, harpoons, and spears, a huge shape burst out sideways, in its full length, from the sea. Wrapped in a thin veil of mist that descended like rain, it hovered for a moment in the iridescent air and then fell back, diving again into the sea.
